Application: Waste and Recycling Management

Benefit: Automatically identifies receptacles thereby improving the efficiency of the billing process and provides data that can give incentives to households that recycle.

Major components

  • A tag that is in a rugged package or manufactured into the receptacle to protect it from the environment. It has an ID that links with the customer / household account.
  • A reader / antenna system on the waste hauler vehicle. The antenna particularly needs to be in a rugged package. Generally, the tag and the reader need to be in fairly close proximity to each other. It is important that the correct tag is being read at the time the receptacle is being weighed.
  • Sometimes the hauler is also identified with an RFID tag
  • On-board hauler computer with link to back office system
  • Integration with municipality system

End Users:

  • Municipalities
  • 3rd party waste management companies
  • Recycling rewards incentives companies

RFID-specific skills:

  • Technical understanding of Low Frequency half-duplex (HDX) technology used in many waste management applications.
  • Ability to mount readers and antennas on RF-unfriendly vehicles
